Hautapu School Board of Trustees

Hautapu is fortunate to have such dedicated and hardworking parents on the Board of Trustees.  The Board meets during the term to discuss, review and plan governance related issues. Board of Trustee meetings are open meetings and parents are invited to come along.

New Entrants

New entrants have many adjustments to make in the transition from pre-school to school.  The physical size of the school, the number of people, a more structured day, eating and playing alongside others, conforming to school rules and the increased effort expended in learning can often leave them very tired at the end of the day.

Is your child ready for school?

  • Do they know their whole name, their address, their telephone number?
  • Do they know how to put things away when not using them.
  • Can they take off or put on outer garments without help?
  • Do they know how to wash and dry hands and flush the toilet after using it?
  • Can they sit and listen to a story?
  • Can they recognise their own belongings?
  • Can they hold and use scissors, recognise colours, recognise digits and letters of the alphabet?

Children should be very aware they don’t go near strangers cars, or in fact they do not change their route home or method of getting home without your expressed permission.

Parent Involvement

The school has an open door protocol for parents coming to visit their children.  As a courtesy though, please make an appointment if you wish to discuss your child’s progress and arrange a mutually suitable time.   Parents are also asked not to come into the class before the 2.35 pm bell.

We really enjoy the level of support given by parents and many staff would welcome your offer if you wished to be a parent help.  The types of things parents have helped with include making classroom resources, repairing books, assisting teachers in the classrooms, working in the class or school library and such like.

Agricultural Day, school trips and camps, sporting, cultural and academic events and other school activities are good opportunities for your involvement.  Parents are actively encouraged to support their child through attendance, participation, assistance with transport and supervision.  There is always plenty of notice about these activities/opportunities in the school newsletter and our term calendars.

Reporting to Parents

Interim reports are issued in May.  Parents are kept informed in literacy and numeracy in line with National Expectations and future strategies for students teaching and learning are outlined.  A detailed end of report is issued in Novemeber.

Friends of Hautapu School

We have an active Friends of hautapu School group who provide support to the children and staff of our school. This group has developed a new constitution and encorage everyone to join.  The group aims to provide a number of fun filled evenings where the community can get together and to support the school with helping with activities and purchasing classroom essentials.
