Attendance

The Education Act governs all enrolment and attendance.  All non-attendance must be explained.  A brief phone call or e-mail to the school or a message sent via another pupil will save a phone call from the school to ascertain the whereabouts and safety of your child.  Please phone before 8.30am.

All pupils are expected to attend school every day the school is open. If for any valid reason your child or children need to be absent from school for any other reason other than illness or family commitments, permission must be sought from the Principal in the first instance.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held each Monday at 8.25am and on Fridays at 2.00pm a Positive Assembly is held in the new school hall.

All parents and caregivers are welcome.

Cool Schools Peer Mediation

Hautapu School operates the Cool Schools programme.

Peer mediation benefits young people to:
  • Build self esteem
  • Build life skills
  • Provides an effective alternative to violence.  Training students in mediation encourages them to find non-violent solutions to their problems
  • Sensitise young people to cultural differences and show them how to approach these in sensitive ways, which cater for all perspectives involved.

Fair Play

Hautapu School has chosen to adopt the Fair Play philosophy throughout the school.

The Fair Play programme (promoted by Sport Waikato and the Hillary Commission) has been designed to provide students with positive experiences, which will help them develop and reinforce their ability to be fair players in life as well as in sport.

The Fair Play philosophy progresses from home – classroom – playground – sports fields – life skills.

Our Fair Play charter is displayed in the school atrium for your perusal.

Our Sport Philosophy

We provide sporting opportunities that teach the values of teamwork and allow students to develop attitudes and skills in life as well as sports,

We work in partnership with clubs, community groups and other schools.

By positively promoting sport all students have the opportunity to:
  • Participate to the highest level of their interest and ability
  • Experience enjoyment and achievement
  • Become competent and enthusiastic
  • We provide extension opportunities through Waikato Full Primary Sports days.
While students experience competition and challenge, FAIRPLAY is practiced in all situations.

Health

Good health is vital to school progress and care should be taken that pupils are not sent to school ill.  We have a medical room that is equipped to handle minor injuries that occur at school, and our staff have up to date St John First Aid certificates.  However, more serious injuries or illnesses will be referred to the parent or caregiver who may take them home or to their doctor.

The school keeps a file of those pupils who have special medical needs, and we ask parents to keep us informed of any changes.  Each year health questionnaires are sent home to be completed.  If medication is required at school this is placed in a container clearly named with instructions, these are kept locked in the medical room.

Home Learning

Your child will have home learning to support the lindividual learning goals in literacy and numeracy.

Lost Property

Clothing and footwear is collected and taken to Kowhai room if left outside.  It is displayed each week at assembly and if not claimed is given to local charities, Weeks 5 and 10 of each term.

Please name all your child’s clothing.

Money Sent to School

If money is required for anything at school, a note will be sent home detailing the amount required and explaining the purpose of the charge expense.  All money should be enclosed in a sealed and named envelope, with the amount written clearly on the outside beside the pupil’s name.

Welfare of Children

The Board of Trustees are responsible for the safety of the children from the time they arrive at school and leave in the afternoon.  Children who cycle to school must wear an approved safety helmet and should be accompanied by an adult if under Year 5.  Before a child cycles to school, parents should ensure that the child can cope with traffic and knows the road rules as they apply to cyclists.

Children are not to leave the school grounds at any time during the day unless a note or call from the parents has been given.  A register must be signed when a student leaves school and signed in again on return.

Parents of children who are going to be late or absent should notify the office first thing in the morning.  This can be done personally or via a note, or phone call.

We ask parents to ensure their children are at school on time and able to start classes at 8.25am.  Any pupils not at school at this time are recorded in the absence book and parents are called to ascertain their child’s whereabouts and welfare before 9.15am.
